In 2023, the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.Eta Xi Omega Chapterawarded a local first-year educator a $1,000 grant to support their efforts in the classroom.
The initiative was in response to assisting first-year educators to help pave the way for a brighter future in education, where passionate teachers can thrive and make a lasting impact on the lives of their students.
Compared nationally, first-time teachers in Alabama are 50% more likely to leave within their first three years of employment, according to theAlabama Commission on the Evaluation of Services.
In 2024, the grant will return but be increased to award $1,000 to a first-year educator in the Tuscaloosa City and Tuscaloosa County school system.

“We are absolutely thrilled to announce the return of our first-year grant program, now with double the impact, by offering a $1,000 grant to support a first-year educator in both Tuscaloosa City and County school systems,” said Dr. Shanté Morton, President of the Eta Xi Omega Chapter.

Organizers encourage the public to nominate a deserving first-year educator within the Tuscaloosa City Schools or the Tuscaloosa County School systems. Click here for the nomination form. The application process is open now until Friday, November 1. One grant will be awarded to a first-year educator in each school system.
The grants are made possible by collaborating with the Uplift Our Local Community Initiative of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., and the Cultured Pearls Foundation.
