Still crazy, Canada – but not as wild as July!

As always, we’ll base our analysis on the Top 20 keywords that weren’t on last month’s Top 20. These are the Canadian shopper searches that have been climbing highest the fastest most recently. Benchmarks for Etsy: fewer than five new is stagnant. More than nine suggests volatility. Lots more shoppers suddenly searching for lots more stuff they weren’t as much just 30 days before.

Once upon a time, Canada’s top Etsy keywords aligned closely with the US list. Then, little by slow, you began veering off in your own direction. By April 2024, you seemed in full revolt. And you had 14 climbers, four of which hadn’t made your previous month’s Top 1000. (We call those screamers because they seem to scream into the Top 20 out of nowhere.)

And pretty much ever since, it’s been a wild ride. In July, you had eight screamers. We’ve never seen that.

So now, with only two screamers, despite the 15 climbers you’ve got, this list seems less extreme. Even with a couple keywords we don’t recall seeing in a Top 20 before. Because none are as nuts as last month’s.

For example, your No. 1 in July (the UK had the same July No. 1) was the screamer “bruno mars shirt.” Let’s take a minute to see how that one is doing now.

Update: July’s No. 1 “bruno mars shirt”

Looks pretty much like the UK’s does now.

Ever see a result (circled in red) like this in a Search Trend line chart? It’s rare! Instead of a line showing August crashing back down to earth, there’s just a hyphen in the pop-up. This is what you see if the result is nil.

“Bruno mars shirt” went from 11,050 searches in July to zero in August. And we’re dropping it here as an object lesson. Never jump on a sudden spike like this. Wait and watch it awhile. Add it to a Keyword List; let that tool track it for you.

And phew! That unprecedented (and weird) search activity has settled down since. So without further ado, let’s get to your new ones.

August’s climbers and screamers

#1 halloween, up from #28

#5 rings, up from #53

#6 home decor, up from #23

#9 pokemon (screamer: not in July’s Top 1000)

#10 candles, up from #70

#11 womens clothing, up from #32

#12 maximalist decor (screamer: not in July’s Top 1000)

#13 birthday gift for her, up from #353

#14 crochet, up from #31

#15 skull, up from #190

#16 ring, up from #30

#17 journal, up from #158

#18 clothing, up from #595

#19 digital products, up from #120

#20 bracelet, up from #51

Fifteen climbers is way too many to talk about; we know you’re busy. So let’s see if we can whittle this down a bit. Your No. 1 is “halloween” because of course it is. It also ranked high a year ago in August. T’is the season.

And eight others are “frequent flyers” – that is, they make regular appearances on your Top 20 lists. In July they were just bumped by that crazy bunch of eight screamers you had. Here are your frequent flyers, restored to their former Top 20 Etsy Keywords glory. #5 rings; #6 home decor; #10 candles; #11 womens clothing; #14 crochet; #16 ring; #18 clothing; and #20 bracelet.

Also, one of your two August screamers we won’t talk about because we’re data geeks, not lawyers. Which means we aren’t qualified to give you legal advice. (But psst! “Warning: beware of trademarked terms. This report may contain keywords that are trademarked.USPTO Trademark Database.”)

All of which leaves us with just your other screamer, “maximalist decor,” and four other climbers to investigate. Excellent! Because that will leave time for a treat we have in store for you at the end of this report!

Ranking 12th: maximalist decor

Huh. This is a screamer, yet the maximalist trend is far from new. There were articles about it in Real Simple and Better Homes and Gardens in 2022. Back again so soon?

Yep: that spike above right looks sus. So, we googled “maximalist decor Etsy” and look what we got.

And there were so many more on that page alone! Is Etsy promoting “maximalist home decor” somewhere on its website with a CTA (Call To Action)?

Once you’ve seen enough of these, you notice when they look like this. Did that many people in Spain, Netherlands, France and Poland type “bruno mars shirt” into Etsy’s search bar? In English? And did so for just the one month, then as abruptly stopped? (He’s still on tour.) Same thing goes for Germany, France and Spain and “maximalist home decor.”

Rather, we think someone (influencers? bots?) was behind all those Bruno Mars searches we saw in July. And in August, that maybe Etsy was promoting “maximalist home decor” via a CTA. Our recommendation? Before changing your SEO, hold off on “maximalist home decor.” Let a Keyword List watch it for you for awhile. See if it sticks.

Ranking 13th: birthday gift for her, up from #353

The US and the UK also have this climber in their Top 20 lists this month. Here’s your data.

Top Etsy Keywords Most Popular with Canadian Shoppers: Latest Updates! (5)

We’ve been seeing this keyword pop up on Top 20 lists recently. It’s definitely an Etsy promo. It probably has a better Average CTR than “maximalist home decor” for one simple reason.

Often, shoppers who click a CTA promo are just curious. In other words, they came to Etsy that day to shop for something else. Which means that for the promo keyword they lacked purchase intent.

New to online selling? CTRs (click-through rates) reflect how many times shoppers using a given keyword clicked on listings in their search results. We care about these because CTRs signal “purchase intent.” That is, a shopper who’s searching with the intention to purchase – as opposed to one just browsing.

The difference between the CTRs bears this out. “Maximalist home decor” would get people clicking out of curiosity, just to see what it is. Whereas on any given day, lots more shoppers came to Etsy to buy “birthday gifts for her.” So they arrived with more purchase intent.

Ranking 15th: skull, up from #190

We were excited to look this one up – we don’t recall seeing it make any Top 20 list before.

Top Etsy Keywords Most Popular with Canadian Shoppers: Latest Updates! (6)

Interesting! “Skull” ranked far higher a year ago in August: it had 8,550 to this August’s 5,600. So why didn’t it make your August 2023 Top 20? It ranked #37; we checked.

Simple: it took way more searches to break into your Top 20 back then. Your 20th-ranked search in August 2023 needed 12,650 searches to secure its spot. This August’s No. 20 only needed 5,400! Ouch.

Nevertheless, “skull” is trending well for you. And don’t be put off by the dearth of searches January through June. For one thing, you had a nice peak in April for “skulls” plural. And also, check this out.

How “skull” looks in the US and UK, now and throughout the year

Here’s what “skull” looks like for the US.

Top Etsy Keywords Most Popular with Canadian Shoppers: Latest Updates! (7)

The Average CTR among Etsy’s US shoppers is 129%! Another difference: it has substantial surges in search volume throughout the year. Are skulls an appealing niche for you? If so, when doing your product research don’t overlook search volume and CTRs (purchase intent!) in other countries. Because the UK also has a lot of interest in skulls. Have a look.

Top Etsy Keywords Most Popular with Canadian Shoppers: Latest Updates! (8)

In the UK, its three highest peaks were in July and December 2023 and in March 2024. In fact, in February “skull” was 58% higher than it was in October there last year, lol. Clearly, for these Etsy shoppers “skull” is trending, and not just for Halloween!

Ranking 17th: journal, up from #158

Yay: the green “Trend Alert” banner! That tells us “journal” is popular with Canadian shoppers now (first week of August).

Top Etsy Keywords Most Popular with Canadian Shoppers: Latest Updates! (9)

And while its 12-mo CTR is only 85%, when calculated for the month, it’s 142%! That’s a lot of purchase intent! (Speaking of which, we’ll have more on that for you right after we finish this last climber.)

Ranking 19th: digital products, up from #120

While this keyword doesn’t have the “trending now” banner, it’s got a far better Average CTR than journal’s: 104%!

Top Etsy Keywords Most Popular with Canadian Shoppers: Latest Updates! (10)

Also, “digital products” has the lowest competition stat we’ve seen since “maximalist decor.” Only 5,219 Canadian listings are using the keyword “digital products” in their listings. And its 15-mo search volume is quite good too! Just that one crash back in August of 2023 when it dropped to 50 searches. Otherwise, it’s stayed above 2,250 searches/mo. For Canada, that’s excellent – enough to rank in your Top 250 most months.

And now for that treat we mentioned having for you! In our monthly Amazon and eBay trend reports, we’ve been doing roundups of high CTR keywords. Starting this month, we’ll close with one for you too. Let us know if you like it! If they work for you, we’ll make it a regular feature.

Roundup! Top Etsy searches with 125%+ CTRs now

Here’s an insider’s roundup of your most promising keywords. That is, Canada’s top Etsy searches that also have the highest CTRs. Remember, even on Etsy, CTRs above 125% are rare. So these keywords should have the most purchase intent with Canada’s Etsy shoppers.

Also note that these calculations are based on their August 2024 search volume and clicks. Which means that regardless of what their 12-mo CTRs may be, these keywords are trending now. We hope some prove to be profitable leads for you!
