Nature of the Crime
Stream on December 10
An HBO Original documentary, Nature of the Crime explores the complex bureaucracy of the United States parole system. The film follows two men, Todd Scott and Chad Campbell, who were convicted of violent crimes when they were teenagers, each of whom has served more than 30 years of their sentence. An intimate story, the documentary details Todd and Chad’s upbringing and the circumstances that ultimately led each man down the path toward crime and incarceration.

The film explores whether these particular men deserve a second chance as well as whether they’re likely to get one. As the filmmakers dive further into the inner workings of parole boards, viewers will receive insight from former parole board commissioners whose job is often politicized and conducted behind closed doors. As Todd prepares for his 6th parole interview and Chad prepares for his 10th, Nature of the Crime acts as a moral inquiry into a penal system that must serve justice while simultaneously showing humanity to prisoners who have been told they might have a second chance at life. While many inmates are given the opportunity to plead their case, the vast majority are denied and forced to remain in prison. Nature of the Crime is streaming on Dec. 10.

Joker: Folie à Deux
Stream on December 13
Directed by Todd Phillips, Joker: Folie à Deux is a jukebox musical, psychological thriller, and sequel to the 2019 award-winning film Joker. The film takes place two years after Arthur Fleck (Joaquin Phoenix) commits his crimes and follows the failed comedian as he awaits trial in Arkham State Hospital. While at a music therapy session, he meets the love of his life, Harleen "Lee" Quinzel (Lady Gaga), who expresses her admiration for his crimes and psychotic personality.
Throughout the film, the pair partake in elaborate musical numbers, which are then juxtaposed with a much bleaker and stark reality. As Arthur struggles with his dual identity, Joker: Folie à Deux attempts to take a deeper dive into his psyche and show viewers what’s happening inside his mind. The film also includes performances by Brendan Gleeson, Catherine Keener, Zazie Beetz, Leigh Gill, Steve Coogan, and Harry Lawtey. Joker: Folie à Deux is streaming on Dec. 13.
