Warner Bros. Discovery’s Max streaming service is gearing up for another wave of new arrivals in November 2024. Emphasizing quality over quantity, the streamer this month plans to add the premiere of a widely anticipated sci-fi series, the return of a beloved comedy show, a brand new original rom-com film, and a slew of documentary projects. No matter what tickles your fancy, Max will likely have it, so let’s dive into what the streaming service has in store for November 2024.
The first major show coming to HBO and the Max streaming platform this month is the eagerly awaited Dune: Prophecy. Set 10,000 years before Denis Villeneuve’s critically acclaimed Dune movies, the HBO original series is based on the novel Sisterhood of Dune, written by Brian Herbert, the son of the original Dune author Frank Herbert, and Kevin J. Anderson. Audiences will follow the ascension of the Bene Gesserit, a group of “witches” with social, religious, and political power in the Imperium who are massively important to the lore of the novel franchise.
Although Denis Villeneuve is not returning to direct the HBO show, Dune: Prophecy is still in safe hands with showrunner and long-time TV writer Alison Schapker, who is best known for her work on Alias, Fringe, and Altered Carbon. With a stacked cast featuring the likes of acting veterans Emily Watson and Mark Strong, Max subscribers still coming off the hype of Dune: Part Two would be foolish not to be glued to their couches for this streaming series. Get ready to return to Arraki on November 17, 2024, when the first of Dune Prophecy‘s six episodes premieres on HBO and Max.
Next up, The Sex Lives of College Girls Season 3 will premiere on November 21, 2024. Created by Mindy Kaling and Justin Noble, the Max show centers on exactly what the title suggests: the sexually active antics of four female students at Essex College. While series breakout/singer Reneé Rapp (Mean Girls) will only be featured in a recurring role in this third season, there will still be plenty of romantic hijinks with the rest of the core cast: Kimberly (Pauline Chalamet), Bela (Amrit Kaur), and Whitney (Alyah Channelle Scott). The Max original series has garnered positive feedback for its fun portrayal of entering young womanhood, and that only seems to be ramping up for this latest season.
Regarding movies, the Max original film Sweethearts premieres on November 28, 2024. Sweethearts stars Kiernan Shipka (Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, Totally Killer) and Nico Hiraga (Booksmart, Skate Kitchen) as two college freshmen who make a pact to break up with their high school sweethearts before coming home for the Thanksgiving holiday. Directed by Jordan Weiss, best known for creating the Hulu series Dollface, this streaming movie is the perfect rom-com treat for couples and romantics at heart this holiday season. With a concept this cute, it wouldn’t be surprising if it sucked in viewers who normally don’t watch these kinds of films as well.
Max has plenty in the documentary space coming to the service throughout November 2024, too. The first is CNN Films’ Carville: Winning is Everything, Stupid. The documentary tells the story of Democratic strategist James Carville. Another is the Ted Turner documentary series Call Me Ted. Next is the HBO original documentary Night is Not Eternal, telling the story of Chinese-American filmmaker Nanfu Wang documenting the exploits of Cuban activist Rosa Maria Paya. The last documentary of note is Surveilled, wherein Ronan Farrow examines the world of commercial spyware.
Of course, Max will be welcoming tons of classics and recent hits to its streaming catalog in November 2024. The A24 collection gets a little bigger with the addition of playwright Annie Baker’s coming-of-age feature debut, Janet Planet, at the top of the month. The streamer is also planning on getting the Christmas festivities started early with A Christmas Story, The Polar Express, Elf, and National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation joining the platform on November 1, 2024. For those not in the mood for holiday movies, Goodfellas, Dirty Harry, and the Jurassic Park trilogy will provide plenty of entertainment among a whole streaming library of great films.
